TEN YEARS TOGETHER & TAKE BACK LABOR DAY
Mark your calendars. UIHC is kicking off its year-long celebration of 10 years as a union hospital. It all started when nurses and other healthcare professionals University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics voted in the summer of 1998 to unionize. That victory set in motion the bringing together UIHC with long standing SEIU school members all across Iowa, many of which have long, storied histories and whose members have a wealth of knowledge about our local.
In addition to food and good company, SEIU International President Andy Stern will be on hand to help us celebrate as

part of his “Take back Labor Day” tour. The corporate media has turned Labor Day — a holiday that is supposed to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of the workers who fought and bled to get us the 8-hour work day, the weekend, and many, many other things we take for granted today — into a day to drink beer and eat hot dogs. They’ve taken the “labor” out of Labor Day.
Anne Gentil Archer, UIHC Chapter President, and Pauline Taylor, both original members of the UIHC Organizing Committee are putting together a program to commemorate the vote ten years ago and the early days of the union in our Local’s biggest chapter.
The party will take place at Iowa City Public Library beginning at 6pm. If you would like to attend, RSVP to 341-0112.
