Meet Our New Rep/Organizer: Audie Schmidt

Audie Schmidt

Audie Schmidt has joined the staff of our local as the newest Rep/Organizer. Audie comes to us having been the field organizer for the Obama Campaign, responsible for Buchanan County during the Iowa Caucuses.  She then staffed a regional office recruiting volunteers to make phone calls into February 5th States. In addition, she worked in Minnesota before the contest there.  Upon returning to Iowa she worked directly under Jackie Norris organizing for the county conventions.  Ms. Norris is now Michelle Obama’s chief of staff.

Additionally, Audie completed the AFL-CIO organizing institute. She has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Northern Iowa and is part way through a master’s in public policy.

“I am so happy to be a part of the momentum and energy at SEIU Local 199.  I look forward to meeting each member and witnessing the continued growth. I love this job!”

We look forward to Audie becoming an integral part of the important work we are doing.

Change That Works:Reform Health Care Now!

Cathy Glasson, Grassley

SEIU is continuing the grassroots work of Iowa for Health Care with a new organization called Change that Works. Since 2002, Iowa for Health Care has worked tirelessly to put health care reform at the top of agenda for candidates running for political office.  As a result we’ve seen several health care candidates elected to office, from city and county positions all the way to the White House.

LET’S PASS THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT AND FIX HEALTH CARE

We can rebuild the Middle Class with the Employee Free Choice Act. While working families struggle, CEOs are making record profits. Even worse, corporations are working hard to deny workers their freedom to unite for a voice on the job—driving down wages, access to affordable healthcare, and retirement security for all of us. These CEOs wouldn’t work a day without a written contract to protect their perks and benefits—so why shouldn’t workers have the same protections? There’s federal legislation that will make sure all workers get a fair chance at achieving the American Dream.

The Employee Free Choice Act will:

• Create a fair playing field that allows all workers the freedom to form unions;

• Prevent corporations from illegally intimidating and firing workers who try to form unions; and

• Give workers the same freedoms to negotiate their contracts that CEOs already have.

SEIU Local 199 Sponsorship Program Accepting Applications!

The SEIU Local 199 Sponsorship Program is designed to connect your union with your life outside of work and at the same time demonstrate that we are an important part of your community. If you are an SEIU Local 199 member and you participate in community or charitable activities that you believe can benefit from Local 199 support, we encourage you to apply for a grant. Please note that the program is not designed to support regular chapter activities or purely recreational activities that do not have a charitable or community component.

Members Approve New Retiree Program

 Retiree Program
President Cathy Glasson outlines the new retiree program during the recent General Membership meeting in Coralville.
We have launched our new retiree program, it was unanimously approved at our recent General Membership meeting. The specifics of the program are still being hammered out, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Please contact Devin Mehaffey if you have ideas or know of any retirees we should contact. To participate in the program, a retiree must have been a member in good standing at the time of retirement. Dues for the program were set by the membership at $30 for a year. Retirees can participate in all union activities with the exception of voting for union officers or holding office in the union. We look forward to keeping our retired members plugged into our work and tapping their tremendous knowledge for the benefit of working Iowans.

Book Club Holds First Meeting

 Book Club
Book Club members Mary Bouillion and Marsha Rech

Our local’s book club, one of three that we’re trying to get off the ground, held its first meeting at the Java House in Iowa City recently. In addition to Mary Bouillion and Marsha Rech, Jim Jacobson attended the event. “It really was a lot of fun,” Mary said of the group’s discussion of the bestselling book “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. This month the club is reading Michael J. Fox’s new memoir “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist.” There’s still time to read the book before the next meeting. For more information, contact Jim Jacobson at the union offices.  Also, we are looking to start a culinary club as well as a beading and crocheting club. If you would like to join one of those, call the office for more details.
